Huber Voltaire (called Jean Huber) 1721 Geneva - 1786 Bellevue near Lausanne, Voltaire Seen in Profile. Counterproof on chine coll?. 25 x 16, 8 cm. Etching. Adh?mar, p. 126 ill. Fine counter-proof mounted on a nineteenth-century cartoon. On the mount several annotations on the technique of the counter-proof by a previous owner. Huber was initially a soldier and had no formal artistic training. He is best known for his portraits of Voltaire, verging on caricature, and silhouettes. The French writer and thinker Voltaire (1694-1778), real name Fran?ois-Marie Arouet, is one of the most notable personalities of the Enlightenment. He conducted a long campaign against religious fanaticism and praised the toleration he had found in England. He wrote plays, poetry, history, philosophy, philosophical tales and polemical antireligious pamphlets (although not an atheist) as well as letters to intellectuals Europe-wide. He was largely exiled from France during his life and lived for a long time in Ferney in Switzerland

Angelo Guiducci active in Venice and Rome, 18th century, A Young Venetian Lady with a Fan, Seated on a Chair. Etching. Undescribed. Like the previous etchings by Guiducci, this is a superb, fresh impression with small margins. With delicate overall plate tone. The figure is strongly reminiscent of those in paintings by Pietro Longhi. Provenance: Liechtenstein Collection
