Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn 1606 - 1669
Christ Preaching: 'La Petite Tombe'
Etching, 1652
Bartsch, Hollstein 67; Hind 256; Biorklund Barnard 52 -2.
Impressions of this print are divided into 'black-sleeve' and 'white-sleeve' impressions; in the early 'black-sleeve' impressions the sleeve of the standing man at left with a turban prints black, because the drypoint used to shade the arm is printing strongly. In the 'white-sleeve' impressions the burr of thedrypoint work has been worn down by being run through the press so that it no longer prints so darkly and the man's sleeve appears white.
This impression is a fine 'black-sleeve' impression which prints with much burr on the sleeve of the standing man, on Christ's arm and robe, and on several other parts of the plate.
20.5 x 15.5 cm (8.07 x 6.1 ins)
Provenance: A.J. Lamme, 1812 - 1900, Director of Boymans Museum, Rotterdam, Lugt 138
